Do your plumbing fixtures drain slowly?

If your bathtub drain slowly, or just running water in your sink can cause it to overflow, then it sounds like you definitely have a drainage problem. Sluggish draining fixtures can because by multitude of reasons. As any Los Angeles plumber can tell you, it is best to start at the simplest symptom and work your way up.

If a sink is draining slowly, check the pop-up to see if there is hair or soap buildup around the stopper. If this theory was clear, then your problem resides further down either in the trap itself, or in the drain line. Unless you have advanced mechanical skills we suggest you leave this to a Los Angeles plumber.

If a toilet is backed up and not flushing properly, the best thing you can do is try a plunger. Beyond this, a professional plumber is required, as it will probably need to be snaked, and in some instances the toilet may have to be taken up.

If a bathtub is slowly draining, you may be able to unscrew the pop-up actuator, pulling it out and inspect to see if there is soap scum buildup or hair around the mechanism. The only option you have if there is neither of these on it, is to reassemble it, put duct tape over the overflow section under this plate, and plunge the tub drain. If you have no results with this, your option is calling a Los Angeles plumber.

If you are experiencing multiple fixtures draining slowly, then the blockage is further down into the drain system and you need professional assistance. Not only could this be a drainage issue, but it may very well be a venting issue. Every fixture is vented to atmosphere, which allows them to drain properly. This is the pipe that extends 18 to 24 inches out of the roof of your home. In the same way a straw will hold soda if you put your finger over the top of it, your drainage system will not allow water to drain if there is no atmospheric pressure on top of it. So if you are having drainage issues contact Patriot Rooter, 24 hours a day seven days a week we are available to answer your call and will send a professional technician right over to your home or business. We can be reached at 800-349-6349.

Looking for a Los Angeles plumber?

Civil engineer reviewing blueprintThe first question to answer as you plan for plumbing a new fixture or an addition to your system is, “How will it be vented?” While designing a plumbing system, you may choose from several venting types; each option may present problems or complications. Your Los Angeles plumber, Patriot Plumbing can do this for you! If you are building an addition on your home, some walls may need to be ‘fattened out’ to contain Stacks, or vent runs… Lets go over venting.

Vent types

A true vent is a pipe that attaches to a drain which travels up and through the roof (VTR) .

If a fixture is in close proximity to the main stack, and on the top floor, the part of the stack above the drain serves as the vent. This is an example of Stack venting most often, this is not the case, and creativity comes into play when planning a venting system.

A Future vent is a vent, which is located in the basement, and runs up to the attic, tying into the Stack below the roof, or, left capped in the attic and the basement for future use, should you intend to install plumbing fixtures in the basement, such as a bathroom.

If two fixtures are back to back, they may tie into the stack with a Double wye; this is called a common vent and can be found on back-to-back sinks, and toilets such as in commercial Mens/womens bathrooms, where they share a common wall.

If a plumbing fixture is near a plumbing stack, a wet vent could be used.. In the case of a tub that is close to a stack, it can be vented thru the pipe that drains it.. This is a common practice known as ‘stack venting’.

For a bar or island sink, where no walls are available to enclose a vent pipe,, code may allow a bow vent. If re-venting is difficult and wet venting isn’t allowed, a separate VTR (vent thru roof) may have to be installed by your licensedLos Angeles Plumber, Patriot Plumbing.

An air admittance valve (AAV) or mechanical vent opens to let air in when waste drains, then gravity closes it to keep sewer gases from entering  into the room. Codes in many localities allow these relatively new devices to take the place of vent lines. AAVs can be used to vent multiple fixtures. They are usually installed at least 4” above the ‘flood level’ of a fixture. Your LA plumber, from Patriot Plumbing will be able to tell you if they can be used under certain circumstances.

The critical distance

A lot rests on math in these situations; An LA plumber can be sure to measure all factors correctly, taking into consideration developed length, fixture units, and venting types used. These are the reasons why plumbers need to be licensed. For anyone who thinks plumbing consists of remembering ‘hot’ is on the left and ‘cold’ is on the right, you need to take another look!

There is a lot that goes into figuring size and location of the venting for your plumbing system. Trust it to an LA plumber like the pros at Patriot Plumbing, and you will get a flawless drainage system with years of great service. If you are putting an addition on your home, and need to modify your plumbing system, contact Patriot Plumbing. We have been satisfying the plumbing needs of the LA area with over 40 years of service! We can be reached at 800-349-6349

Is a water heater replacement in YOUR near future?

There is no tried and true way to know precisely when a water heater needs replacement. Obviously, a leak in the body of the heater requires immediate replacement, and requires the attention of an Los Angeles  plumber If there is a major malfunction, such as complete or partial loss of hot water supply, leakage around plumbing fittings, or the appearance of excessive corrosion on the heater body itself or at the heater’s plumbing connections, AND the unit is more than eight years old, replacement may be preferable to repair (if a repair is possible). I would leave this up to your budget and time schedule. The company to call is Patriot Plumbing in Orange County, CA, They have the technicians and expertise to give you a fair price, and a quality job the FIRST time out.

All the active parts and most of the plumbing parts–the heating elements, thermostat, anode rod, and the various valves–are designed to be replaceable. The main obstacle to disassembly is corrosion. A water heater corrodes more quickly than other plumbing fixtures because of the constant high temperature at which it operates, and the fact that sometimes the water heater acts as an electric ground, accelerating this corrosive process. Corrosion makes replacing any parts chancy, since the replacement may leak, necessitating the replacement of the entire heater. So, like a conscientious Boy Scout, be prepared for the possibility of replacement even when the repair seems simple and straightforward. So it goes with plumbing!

Specifically, with a water heater more than 8 years old, repairs are probably not cost-effective, since the life expectancy of a water heater is only 8-12 years. As they age, they become less efficient. This is true for all heaters, but more for electric types. Modern water heaters have better insulation and are more efficient “out of the box,” so you may notice dramatic savings in fuel and/or electric costs by replacing it. While the initial cost for replacement is a bit higher, you should notice savings in your energy costs. So, if you need a water heater replaced, call Patriot Plumbing in Los Angeles for a headache free replacement. They can be reached 24/7 at 800-349-6349

What Should I Do if I Have Banging Pipes?

If you have “banging pipes” then chances are you have a problem known as “water hammering”. A “water hammer” (or, more generally, fluid hammer) is a pressure surge or wave resulting when a fluid in motion is forced to stop or change direction suddenly (momentum change). Water hammering commonly occurs when a valve is closed suddenly at an end of a piping system, and a pressure wave propagates in the pipe. It may also be known as hydraulic shock.

This pressure wave can cause major problems, from noise and vibration to pipe collapse or rupture. It is possible to reduce the effects of the water hammer pulses with accumulators or arrestors and other features. This is where Patriot Plumbing and Rooter comes in! As a leading plumber in L.A., they can solve this problem quickly. The problem itself is just “over pressurizing” as a valve (usually a faucet) is closed.  If the pipe is suddenly closed at the outlet (downstream), the mass of water before the closure is still moving forward with some velocity, building up a high pressure and shock waves. In domestic plumbing, this is experienced as a loud banging resembling a hammering noise. Water hammer can cause pipelines to break if the pressure is high enough. Air traps or standpipes (open at the top) are sometimes added as dampers to water systems to provide a cushion to absorb the force of moving water in order to prevent damage to the system. (At some hydroelectric generating stations, what appears to be a water tower is actually one of these devices, known as a surge drum.)

In the home, water hammer may occur when a toilet, washer machine or dishwasher shuts off water flow. The result may be heard as a loud bang, repetitive banging (as the shock wave travels back and forth in the plumbing system), or as some shuddering.

On the other hand, when an upstream valve in a pipe is closed, the water downstream of the valve will attempt to continue flowing, creating a vacuum that may cause the pipe to collapse or implode. This problem can be particularly acute if the pipe is on a downhill slope. To prevent this, air and vacuum relief valves, or air vents, are installed just downstream of the valve to allow air to enter the line and prevent this vacuum from occurring.

Other causes of water hammer are pump failure, and check valve slam (due to sudden deceleration, a check valve may slam shut rapidly, depending on the dynamic characteristic of the check valve and the mass of the water between a check valve and tank). So if you have water hammer issues, contact Patriot Plumbing in Orange County, CA. You’ll be happy you did!

What Should I Do About Water Hardness?

Many commercial and domestic water users are concerned about the hardness of their water. Hard water requires more soap and synthetic detergents for home laundry and washing, and contributes to scaling in boilers, water heaters and industrial equipment. Hardness is caused by compounds of calcium and magnesium, and by a variety of other metals. Water is an excellent solvent and readily dissolves minerals it comes in contact with. As water moves through soil and rock, it dissolves very small amounts of minerals and holds them in a solution. Calcium and magnesium dissolved in water are the two most common minerals that make water “hard.”

The hardness of water is referred to by three types of measurements: grains per gallon, milligrams per liter (mg/L), or parts per million (ppm). Water in The Orange County area is considered ‘very hard’ at 10-14 gpg.

If you are experiencing hardness problems, call the Los Angeles Plumber in LA, Patriot Plumbing! We will send a qualified technician to your home or business and assess the situation, and will install a water softener for you. A water softener does just that; it softens the water. Water softening is the reduction of the concentration of calcium, magnesium, and certain other metal cations in hard water. These “hardness ions” can cause a variety of undesired effects including interfering with the action of soaps, the buildup of lime scale, which can foul plumbing, and galvanic corrosion. So, in order to keep these contaminates from building up, call Patriot Plumbing Orange county CA, we can address all your water hardness issues.
